Dismissal Procedures

Due to the pending inclement weather, all RCS events scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday January 19, 2019 have been cancelled.

Dismissal Procedures

 Update: Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Dear Herbert Mills STEM Families,

We are making a slight change to our dismissal procedure for families picking up their children in the car line after school. Beginning this afternoon, we will be putting traffic cones in the parking lot right past the handicapped parking spaces to make it easier for drivers to pull up and get their students.

The cones will block off the area next to the pick-up line so that there is only one lane of cars picking up students. Drivers who are picking up students will line up in the car line as usual and will be motioned by staff to pull up to pick-up spots 5, 6, and 7 (as usual). The cones will block any other cars from getting through during this time so that all students are safe while they are getting into their cars.

If you are a family member that is parking in the lot and walking up to the building to pick up your child, please make a teacher/staff member on duty aware that you in fact need to park in the lot so that they can move the cones for you.

Remember to have your orange pick-up card ready. If you happen to forget it we will direct you through the line to spots 1, 2, or 3 to park and go into the office to get a replacement.

Thank you for helping us make a safe environment for all children.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Ellen Weeks, Principal

Update: Wednesday, March 7, 2018

 Dear Herbert Mills STEM Families,

We will be making a few minor dismissal changes starting next Wednesday, March 7. There will be no change for bus riders, walkers, or day care students.  The only changes will affect car riders at the end of the school day.

Our car riders will line up in the same place outside.  Cars will no longer be pulling all the way up to pick-up spots numbered 1, 2, 3, or 4 to pick up students.  Cars will be asked to pull up to pick-up spots numbered 5, 6, and 7 only.  We will then check for orange pick-up cards and students will be released to drivers with cards.

We will have pick-up spots numbered 1, 2, and 3 open so that drivers who do not have an orange pick-up card may park along the curb and go into the office to get a replacement card.  Spot 4 will no longer be used for pick-ups.

We will be sending another orange pick-up card home with your student today. The orange pick-up cards will not be changing.  Anyone who is picking up a child will need to have an orange pick-up card.  This includes grandparents, neighbors, and anyone else who does not regularly pick up your student from school.  Even if you are walking up to the building to pick up your child, you will still need an orange pick-up card.  If you come to Herbert Mills STEM to pick up a student and you do not have an orange pick-up card, you will need to stop in the office to get one.

Please continue to use the crosswalks on the west side of our parking lot by the bus loop.  This allows children and family members to cross in safe zones.  Remember that the bus loop is for buses only – do not park in the bus loop to pick a student up (or drop a student off).

Our main priority is the safety of all our students and we would like to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding concerning this change.  If you have any questions regarding dismissal, please contact Mr. Cracraft at ccracraft@reyn.org.

Update: Monday, August 28, 2017

Good Afternoon Herbert Mills Families,

Thank you for your patience with dismissal this afternoon! Overall, dismissal was very successful. There are a few minor changes that we will implement tomorrow. We will have a staggered dismissal with bus riders being dismissed at 2:25, car riders being dismissed at 2:27, and walkers and daycare students being dismissed when the bell rings at 2:30.

If your child is walking home by themselves they will continue to do so. These children will be dismissed from the Door 5 hallway. If you are a parent that is parking to gather your child or walking up to gather your child, then these students will no longer wait outside by Door 4, but will be moving into the hallway at Door 5. You will be able to pick your child up at Door 5 with your orange pick up card. These students will no longer walk out of Door 2 and walk to Door 4 where they were dismissed today. These children will now stay in the building and line up in the hallway at Door 5. The parent waiting area will still be located by Door 4.

If you have not yet returned your student’s salmon-colored EMA (Emergency Medical Authorization) form and their mint green-colored Authorization for Student Pick-Up form, please turn these in as soon as possible. We need these to know who we are allowed to release your child to at dismissal and who to contact in case of emergency. Please call the office if you need extra copies of these forms sent home.

Thank you for your patience with dismissal. We will continue to fine tune it throughout this week as needed so we can have a smooth dismissal experience for everyone!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Ellen Weeks, Principal

Information sent home Friday, August 25, 2017:

Good Afternoon Herbert Mills Families,

We will be starting a new dismissal procedure this coming Monday, August 28. There are a few papers coming home today related to this dismissal on Monday. One of the papers is a bright orange STUDENT PICK UP CARD and the other paper is a map of our new dismissal areas.

The biggest change for dismissal is that if you are picking up a student you will need to have your student pick up card. We will not allow any student to leave without this card. If you do not have your card you will need to stop in the office at dismissal. This card will be used for our car riders, walkers, and parents who park and come to gather their children. We will have a specific area (which is outlined on the map) where parents will meet to pick up their children. You will need to show the student pick up card at this time. This new designated area will be located by DOOR 4 at the corner of the building west of the office (by the bus loop). The doors are marked with numbers. Students will line up along the wall and will be released to you once the pick up card is shown.

Please continue to use the crosswalks that are on the west side of our parking lot by the bus circle. This allows for children and family members to cross in safe zones.

New Dismissal Procedure

  • Bus riders will dismiss the same as always.
  • Car riders will dismiss the same as always….except you will have to show your student pick up card.
  • Daycare buses have been moved to the east side of the building where they will pick up students behind the fence near the playground.
  • Walkers and parents who park will pick up their children by DOOR 4 after showing your student pick up card. These students will exit through DOOR 2 and walk to DOOR 4 where they will be met by parents.

A staff member will be located at each of these areas to make for a smooth transition on Monday! Thank you for your patience as we make sure all our students are safe.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Ellen Weeks, Principal
