Board approves student reassignments with Graham Road closing

The closing of Graham Road Elementary next year will affect attendance boundaries for the 2010-11 school year. The school is being closed one year earlier than planned in order, saving at least $500,000, in order to help balance the district's budget until the operating levy approved by voters this month becomes effective.

Students who would have attended Graham Road Elementary will attend Taylor Road Elementary or Slate Ridge Elementary next year.  The preschool also will be relocated to Slate Ridge Elementary.

Slate Ridge and Taylor Road are the only two elementary schools not currently undergoing renovation projects and are in close proximity to the students. The move however will cause the reassignment of about 120 Slate Ridge students to French Run and Herbert Mills. Another 23 students who now attend Herbert Mills will be moved to Rose Hill Elementary.

Every effort will be made to welcome students into their new schools in the fall. Letters will be sent to the affected families this week. If your student will be attending a new school next year, please don't hesitate to contact the school to set up a tour or meet with the principal.  You'll hear from your new school this summer with news about special events and other activities planned for next school year.

Safety services, students cooperate to evacuate high school on Thursday

On Thursday May 13th, Reynoldsburg High School students were dismissed early because of a power outage in the high school. A transformer blew causing a loud noise and a fire hazard. Firefighters on the scene turned off power to the school and evacuated students.

Students were then dismissed because power could not be restored right away.

Simultaneously, we experienced a disturbance in the high school. A suspicious letter was found in a bathroom at the school, and student mobility was limited while Reynoldsburg police officers investigated.  An arrest was made.  The threat turned out to be unfounded, but school and safety officials take all such incidents seriously because student safety is our top priority.
