RHS Celebrates Oktoberfest, Slow Foods Style!

Mr. Horn cooks for Oktoberfest

Guten tag! Mr. Horn's Slow Food class at RHS' Livingston Campus learned how to make bratwurst and sampled some traditional German fair food to kick off Oktoberfest, a month-long German celebration.

The menu consisted of brats and saurkraut, potato salad and pancakes, spaetzle, apple strudel and more. Mr. Horn invited the owner of Holly Hill Farm's Meat Shoppe to speak to students about what goes into making sausage. Did you know that one ingredient separates bratwurst from other sausages? That ingredient is nutmeg.

Mr. Horn spoke to the class about "heirloom cooking," meaning cooking as a family. Often times relatives will pass recipes down generation to generation.

The majority of the class sampled food they had never eaten before, which delighted Mr. Horn. "That's the purpose of this class, to try something new," he said.
