Slate Ridge, BELL, (HS)2 win ‘Promise’ honors

For the fourth consecutive year, Slate Ridge Elementary School has been named a School of Promise by the Ohio Department of Education. And for the first time, it has also been recognized as a High Performing School of Honor by ODE.

In addition, both of the high school academies at the Livingston campus, (HS)2 and BELL, have been named Schools of Promise for the first time.

Sue Martin is principal at Slate Ridge. Erica Dodson is BELL Academy principal, and Anne Baldwin leads the (HS)2 Academy.

Slate Ridge was the only central Ohio school to be named a School of Honor, a distinction given to just 37 schools statewide. School of Promise recognition went to 141 schools statewide. At least 40 percent of students at eligible schools are economically disadvantaged.

“Schools of Promise and the prestigious High Performing Schools of Honor are examples of what can happen when principals, teachers, parents and community member all believe that children can learn,” said Dr. Richard A. Ross, superintendent of public instruction and former Reynoldsburg superintendent. “These schools overcome challenges, sometimes significant challenges, to provide a high-quality education to Ohio children.”

Recipients of the School of Promise award must have a 75 percent proficiency rate in two subgroups; a grade of A or B for narrowing performance gaps between student groups on the local school report card; and a graduation rate of A or B.

High Performing School of Honor recognition goes to schools with a 90 percent or better average proficiency rate over a five-year period on the Ohio Achievement Assessment, including a 75 percent proficiency level for four significant subgroups on the same tests. They must achieve a grade of A, B, or C for narrowing gaps in student performance; a progress grade of A, B, or C on the report card; and a graduation rate of 90 percent or higher over a five-year period.

Banners citing their achievement will go to all three schools.
