Literacy Night Event Fun Geared Toward Families

Reynoldsburg and Pickerington students were "book buddies" at Taylor Road Elementary School's Literacy Night Nov. 12 as students read together, mingled with mascots or visited craft areas and science tables.

Held at the Barnes & Noble bookstore, 1738 Hill Road N., Pickerington, the event was designed to promote literacy, but also "to bring the kids, teachers and families out for a good time," Taylor Road Elementary Principal Jeremy Miller said.

"The kids could have their faces painted, browse for books with their parents and participate in a number of fun activities," he said. "We also had our mascot, Taylor Tornado, there and Clifford the Big Red Dog."

He said teachers had filled out a "wish list" of books needed for classrooms and the school library, so parents could buy the books that night. Parents also were given vouchers so a percentage of every purchase could earn the school a gift card to purchase more needed items.

Miller said he appreciated the bookstore's coordination of the event and the enthusiastic parent and student participation.

"We have some phenomenal parent support at Taylor Road -- I adore the parents here," he said.
