Contest Win Pays Off with Better Reading Skills

Whether learning about a British warship sunk on Lake Ontario or the fact that elephants live longer in the wild than in captivity, sixth-graders in Reynoldsburg City Schools likely read those Associated Press articles on Achieve3000.

A group of Waggoner Road Middle School English Language Learner sixth-graders proved their reading prowess by perusing similar articles and winning Achieve3000's "Read to Succeed" contest.

The online content-provider is a district curriculum resource that uses interesting nonfiction articles to help students ramp up their reading comprehension skills.

"I ask my students to complete a minimum of three Achieve3000 articles every week," teacher Mawdo Fall said. "It is an excellent resource for teaching vocabulary and reading-comprehension strategies, which are areas of struggle for all of my ELL students."
