Forty-two students from across the nation descended onto Capital Hill in Washington D.C. for the YMCA's youth Advocacy Days. One of those students, and one of only two representatives from Ohio, was our own BELL Academy student, Parker Gutman.
As an advocate, Parker learned about the Y-USA’s national legislative priorities, heard from thought leaders about the Y's role and impact in communities; visited with members of Congress and/or their staff to push the priorities of the Y and connected with Youth Advocates from across the country.
Though the event has occurred the past five years, this was the first time Parker attended. What did he take away from the experience? "It's easier to talk to your legislators than you think," he said. "Our representatives are receptive to talking and their offices are always open. They're human, after all!"
Parker's priority, Social Responsibility, centered around the Charitable Tax Act, which allows for above-the-line deductions for charitable contributions for individuals not itemizing deductions. Capital Hill, full of history and the home office of different Senators and Representatives was Parker's favorite place in D.C.
