BELL Heroes Claim Victory in 5K Charity Race
Brandon, Jamar and Geniro with Officer HinesWhen it was time for the Reynoldsburg Police Department to start planning for the Heroes for Heroes 5k, a community obstacle course and race, Officer Hines wanted to involve students from Reynoldsburg High School. The RPD Reserve Program offered to sponsor a team and three BELL Academy Seniors stepped up.

Jamar, Geniro and Brandon were excited to participate and weren't deterred when Officer Hines explained that it was not only a race, but an obstacle course that included walls, low crawls, navigating water and mud pits and more. In fact, when the race was over, the team was third place overall out of 199 participants.

The 5k benefits Hope for the Warriors, a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for post- 9/11 service members.

"The were awesome," said Officer Hines. "They were excited to participate and they served as an inspiration to others in the community and at their high school, we've heard several people saying they want to put together a team as a result."

All three seniors have participated in athletics, Jamar and Geniro play football and Brandon runs track and cross country. Still, the cold weather and water made for a challenging experience. "It was dirty," said Brandon. "The hardest part for me was the sled pull, where you had to pull another member of the team or a volunteer," said Jamar.

"You definitely have to pace yourself, but we worked as a team. I would definitely do it again," said Geniro.

All three boys have college on their mind. Jamar wants to go to school down south to study Art and Design, Geniro has his eye on the University of Cincinnati to study Business and Marketing and Brandon is in talks with several schools to study Sports Medicine.

"Next year, we're going for the win!" the boys said.
