'Meetup' Sessions Tap into 'Maker Community'
'Meetup' Sessions Tap into 'Maker Community'Reynoldsburg school officials hope a new partnership and a series of "Meetup" sessions will make more people aware that the district's "maker spaces" are open to the public.

The district has a number of "maker spaces" for students and one of the largest and best-equipped spaces -- the Reynoldsburg Battelle Fab Lab -- is open to the public again this year.

Located inside eSTEM Academy at 8579 Summit Road, the Fab Lab is open from 5 to 8 p.m. each Monday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

"We are currently developing a partnership with Bill Ball, who moved to the Columbus area after being instrumental in setting up a community of makers in Orlando," said Thomie Timmons, district director of innovation labs.

Ball is a former professor at Stetson University in Deland, Florida. He is founder of the Innovation House at Stetson, which he has said is for college students "who have big dreams and ideas, but have never held a soldering iron."

"With Bill's guidance, we have begun to utilize Meetup," Timmons said. "Using this app, we have set up an East Columbus Maker Meetup from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the Fab Lab.

"It is our hope that we can then better gauge interest specific to the maker community."
