Think well.  Do good.  Create beauty.

The mantra embraced by some of Ohio's leaders in STEM education provides a great starting point for explaining STEM without educational jargon.  STEM is an acronym for "Science, Technology, Engineering and Math," but STEM education is not limited to those disciplines.  Instead, it provides a hands-on, wholistic, problem-solving approach designed to prepare students for academics, work and life in the 21st Century.

Think Well

The teaching style emphasized in STEM education is "inquiry-based."  Teachers guide students in scientific explorations of complex topics or problems.  Like scientists and engineers, students practice asking questions, proposing answers, testing their ideas and defending solutions.  They develop strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Do Good

Meaningful partnerships with higher education, businesses and scientists are crucial to developing authentic, relevant lessons and to creating learning opportunities for students outside the classroom.  Practicing scientists, entrepreneurs and civic leaders can help make connections between school work and the real world.  Service learning is an important component to STEM education.

Create Beauty

The arts and humanities help students understand their world and their culture.  Science, technology, engineering and math concepts are integrated with humanities and arts just like in real world jobs and projects.
