Assessments & State Testing
Ohio Assessments
Ohio’s State Tests measure how students statewide are developing the knowledge and skills described in Ohio’s Learning Standards in a selected number of subject areas. The test results also help measure each public school’s performance, which is reflected on its annual Ohio School Report Card.
As mandated by federal and state laws, all districts and schools are required to administer state tests to students in specific grades and courses. Please note that there is no legal provision allowing students or parents to opt out of state testing, and no opt-out procedure or form exists. Should a student be withdrawn from state testing, it could result in consequences for the student, their teacher, as well as the school and district.
State tests are essential tools for measuring student learning, ensuring that every Ohio student receives a high-quality education, and maintaining accountability at both the school and district levels. The results of these tests play a critical role in tracking academic progress and meeting state requirements.

Tips for Successful Testing
Below are some tips to help students prepare for the Ohio assessments, or any test they may be taking:
1) In the weeks leading up to the assessments, practice with your teachers, take practice tests or work with a study buddy.
2) The night before, get a good night's sleep! A quick review of the material is fine and then let your body and brain rest.
3) The day of the test, eat a healthy breakfast. Arrive early so you are not feeling rushed, and use the extra time to review. Make sure you have the required materials to take the test: pencils, calculators, scrap paper, etc.
4) Manage your time. Make sure to allow time at the end to review and ensure you answered every question to the best of your ability and check for accidental mistakes (like skipping a question).
5) Have a positive attitude!
