Beautifying the Burg from the Inside Out

Four seniors- three of them triplets- took an assignment from Mr. Alexander’s Government Class and brought it to life at RHS’ Summit Campus. The ask: How can you make Reynoldsburg Better? Breanna, Brooke and Blake Vanmeter and Sydney Snyder wanted to create a mural to bring joy to everyone who sees it.
After acing their class, they took the next step, bringing the mural from an idea on paper to a wall. Getting approval from Mr. Wagner, Executive Director, Business & Operations, working with Superintendent Dr. Tracy Reed on where to place the mural, and even soliciting advice about materials from mural-pro and RCS Teacher Ms. Wollam, these students left no stone unturned.
Brooke reached out to Lowes and had most of the paint, brushes, trays and other materials donated. They still need some specialty paint and a couple of other items and have started a GoFundMe where community members can donate toward the project.
“We really just need to cover the cost of the lacquer, a couple of gallons of paint and some more brushes,” said Brook. “If we go over our goal, we plan to donate anything extra to the Art Department.”
Breanna created the mural concept. “I wanted to include all students, so I drew inspiration from my classes throughout the day,” she said. “STEM learning, Arts, Athletics, even Rocky is represented in this mural, so no matter who you are, you see a part of yourself in it when you walk by.”
Blake stays behind the scenes, running the GoFundMe, setting up the projector on the wall and more. Sydney, who has taken art classes throughout high school, makes sure the details on the mural pop.
The four seniors have been working on this mural since the first day of summer school and plan to have a finished product in the next few weeks. We can’t wait to see the completed project!
