Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month. With that, we’d like to share some of the supports and resources available to all learners and families in Reynoldsburg City Schools:

  • K-12 participation in Sources of Strength suicide prevention curriculum since 2022. This program focuses on identifying student strengths, building community among peer groups, and creating inclusive environments where all students can have representation.
  • Engagement in annual prevention education for students in grades 7-12 focused on suicide prevention, violence prevention, and social inclusion utilizing evidence-based resources.
  • Bi-annual student perception surveys and risk screeners to identify youth at risk for mental health and other barriers to success.
  • Promotion of student health & wellness initiatives through defined social emotional learning curriculums, small group interventions, and positive behavior focused work. All buildings in RCS have access to evidence-based interventions.
  • School Social Workers, school-based behavioral health, and prevention services in all 11 buildings.

Another important piece of suicide prevention is to know how to take care of yourself and others.

How to take care of yourself:

  1. Ask for help
  2. Make a safety plan
  3. Recognize the impacts of conflicts and pressures that feel overwhelming or stressful
  4. Identify safe relationships (friends, loved ones) that prioritize mutual respect and offer support.
  5. Practice activities that bring joy and peace: take a walk, listen to music, engage in deep breathing, play a game, spend time with friends/family.

How to help others:

  1. Never dismiss what your friend or loved one is saying
  2. Listen with empathy and provide support. How we respond can influence how someone reaches out for support in the future.
  3. Learn the warning signs. A helpful list can be found at this link
  4. Don’t keep suicide a secret. If someone is considering suicide, offer help and support but never a secret. Asking for help for yourself or someone else is always a smart choice.
