Dear Reynoldsburg City Schools Families,
Legislation was passed on December 14th, 2021, setting the expectation that all of Ohio’s students experience a K-12 education that prepares them to utilize
skills and rigorous academic content to prepare them for post-secondary education and the workforce. The great news is that Reynoldsburg City Schools is ahead of the curve as we have already been focused on building 21st Century skills consistently in all classrooms by engaging students in deeper learning in every classroom, every day. We engage students in deeper learning using the Reynoldsburg City Schools Portrait of a Graduate competencies that we adopted as a part of the
District’s Five-Year Strategic Plan. It is our goal that every student in the District participates in interdisciplinary project-based- real world learning opportunities regularly by 2024.
Reynoldsburg City Schools’ Portrait of a Graduate competencies, alongside rigorous academic content, is our vision for 21st Century Deeper Learning. The five competencies are fostered and supported in classrooms beginning in Kindergarten and throughout their educational career. The five competencies that are outlined in the Reynoldsburg Portrait of a Graduate are:
- Innovative Problem Solver
- Socially & Emotionally Competent
- Effective Communicator
- Collaborative
- Socially Aware & A Global Citizen
Here are some ways you might see these competencies come to life for your child:
- Projects that require students to apply what they’ve learned and to share their work
- Mock job interviews, presentations, and career fairs
- Media, technology, and entrepreneurship classes
- Panel discussions with community partners for the purpose of solving problems
- Creating solutions to environmental issues that impact us locally and globally
- Working in a group to create and share a final product
- Mentorship programs between high school and elementary students
- Student-led events that benefit local/state/national charities and non-profit organizations
- Paid internships and volunteer opportunities
As you are aware, the Portrait of a Graduate competencies are reflected on students’ report cards. Don’t forget, report cards are finalized for the second quarter of the school year as of today. You can access your child’s report card online to see their progress as they work to master both grade level standards, as well as 21st century skills.
We are excited to be on this journey with our students. I look forward to seeing our students thrive as leaders who impact the NOW and innovate the FUTURE.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jocelyn Cosgrave
