A Star(lite) is Born!

A cotillion is similar to a debutante ball, where senior girls participate as a rite of passage.

“As we transition into adulthood, we present ourselves to our friends and family to show them our accomplishments and future endeavors,” said Mahogany. “I am a third-generation debutante, and I have been looking forward to this since my mom shared her experience with me.”

The Cotillion offers two scholarships, one for community service and one for academics. Mahogany plans to attend a 4-year college and major in medical engineering and minor in either biology or architecture. “Eventually, I want to attend law school, practice intellectual property law and work in a STEM field,” Mahogany said.

In addition to her schoolwork and cotillion, Mahogany is involved in Model UN, the Leo Club and is on the swim and track teams. Outside of school, she is the Chaplin of the Rhoer Club, an affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. She also participates in the Young Life Youth Group and is a Lifeguard. A.K.A she is very busy in and out of school!

For those interested in cotillions, Mahogany has this advice: “Be open to understanding and experiencing it. Go to an informal meeting and see if it is something you are interested in. Don’t knock it till you try it! It’s important to not be afraid to be different. Because so many people don’t know what my cotillion was, it was sometimes a lonely process. I had to explain what it was and why it was important to me. However, I loved the time I spent participating. I wouldn’t have won the scholarship, developed friendships, or shown my friends and family all my accomplishments without it.”

Congratulations on your debut and all of your achievements, Mahogany!
