Portraits come to life at Wesley Ridge Retirement Community

Ms. Borthwick’s Advanced Art Class, comprised of students from Reynoldsburg High School’s BELL and HS2 Academies completed a community service project where they drew portraits of the residents of Wesley Ridge Retirement Community.

When it came time to choose their subjects this year, the students voted to do a local project, so Ms. Borthwick reached out to Wesley Ridge.

She connected with Richelle Bhandari, Wesley Ridge’s life enrichment coordinator, who sent photos of her residents to the class.

The portraits are pencil drawings, which utilized skills learned last year. Each student drew two portraits and then the class took a trip to Wesley Ridge to meet their subjects in person.

“The residents were all excited to participate,” said Richelle. “We were able to involve residents from all levels of care.”

“I thought my portrait was amazing,” said Herb, a resident at Wesley Ridge. “It looks exactly like me!”

Taylor, a BELL sophomore was Herb’s artist. Ruth, another resident, thought her artist, Randy, another sophomore also did a really good job.

“Everybody was pleased with how the portraits turned out,” she said.

After residents and family members viewed the portraits, they mingled with the students, enjoying snacks and getting to try their hand at drawing their own portrait.
