A new group of volunteers are supporting students at Rose Hill Elementary School. The school is piloting a program where grandparents with students in the building can volunteer to help with reading and math. 

“The goal is to create a program that will not only bridge the generational gap but also enhance the learning experiences for our teachers, students and grandparents who participate,” according to Principal Damicka Bates. 

Regina Rembert helped develop the program, which currently has six participants who volunteer once a week.

“As a mother of six and a grandmother of 11 children, there is no greater feeling than making a positive impact on the lives of our children,” Rembert said. “I am working with the kindergarten students and love reading with them. They are so bright, and it has been a joy for me to listen to them read and work on their individual sight words.”

Principal Bates says the grandparent program is off to a successful start, and she looks forward to the positive effect it will have in the school.

“While the main goal of the program is to build lasting relationships that positively impact student development, I also believe it will enhance a deeper sense of community within our school and among our families,” she said.
