Girl Scouts, Reynoldsburg schools team up for Oct. 3 STEM event

Girl Scouts in second through fifth grades who attend Reynoldsburg City Schools -- or girls in those grades who want to be Girl Scouts -- will get an opportunity to participate in design challenges and meet female engineers at STEMfest: Exploring Engineering.

The Oct. 3 event is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at TSTech Americas, 8458 E. Broad St., Reynoldsburg.

Admission is $5 per girl and includes lunch. Pre-registration is required, by Sept. 23 at any Reynoldsburg City Schools office.

Questions should be directed to Beth Aiello, Girl Scouts of Ohio's Heartland Council, at 614-487-8101 or via email at [email protected].

Courtney Heppner, district director of innovation, said the girls-only event is a collaboration among the schools, the Heartland Council and TSTech Americas.

"Even though many girls in elementary school show high aptitude and interest in STEM subjects, research shows that the majority of them will lose interest in middle school and therefore are routinely underrepresented in STEM career fields," she said.

She said the school district always is searching for partners who could help inspire girls to continue with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) classes and assist girls in progressing toward careers in STEM-related fields.
