In an effort to avoid confusion or disappointment, I would like to alert parents and guardians now of a future scheduling conflict. This year Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day will be observed on Thursday, April 24th. While I understand that this is an enjoyable opportunity for children to experience their parents’ professional responsibilities, the timing of this event could not be worse for our students’ learning.
Although in
April it may seem like the year is winding down, our students will still be
very focused and busy. Younger students
will be completing the learning of education standards and preparing for
year-end assessments. Third and fourth
graders will be getting ready for the Ohio Achievement Assessments the
following week. All of our students are taking their spring benchmark
assessments. For the second graders,
April 24th is an especially important day. The Terra
Nova and InView tests will be administered April 21st – 25th. With this direct conflict in mind, I am strongly
urging parents to send their student(s) to school on April 24th and
instead plan a “Take Your Child to Work Day” over summer vacation. Please be advised that Taylor Road Elementary
staff does not recognize Take Our
Daughters and Sons to Work Day as a legitimate reason to miss a day of
school.
Again, we
recognize that there is much to be learned from a day at work with mom or dad,
but hope that this early notice will allow parents, guardians, and employers to
make alternate plans - allowing our students’ education to remain their most important job. Thank you for your cooperation and
understanding in this matter. If you
have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Darrell Propst
