A purple star will soon be on display at French Run Elementary School. The school has been awarded a Purple Star designation by the state of Ohio for its commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

“French Run is proud to honor our military heroes and their families who selflessly serve our country and community,” said Principal David Schottner.

Mr. Schottner says the support began with staff members who are currently serving in the military and then branched out to families as well. The school holds donation drives to collect items for military care packages and recognizes active military members and veterans during a special assembly with students in October. The school also provides professional development for staff on how to support military students and families.

Ben Van Curen, the father of a French Run student, has served in the U.S. Army for eight years.

“I am proud of my service and the support of French Run. We swore an oath for their freedom. I respect French Run for respecting me and my brothers’ and sisters’ choice to defend the rights of the American people,” Sgt. Van Curen said.

The state of Ohio announced the Purple Star Class of 2024 in April as part of Ohio’s participation in the national celebration of the Month of the Military Child.

“Congratulations to this year’s class of Ohio Purple Star schools for supporting student success, strengthening school-family partnerships, and recognizing the sacrifice of military service members and their families,” said Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin. “It is wonderful to see the meaningful ways Ohio’s learning communities are showcasing their commitment to military families.”
