Girls on the Run Club

Miss Melissa Pope (speech & intervention teacher) and Mrs. Alison Buehler (intervention teacher) have attended training sessions and are volunteering their time to start a Girls on the Run Club at Rose Hill Elementary! Girls on the Run is a youth development program to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, experienced based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Currently, we have twelve 3rd and 4th girls signed up. Students meet twice a week after school. Our lessons cover three main areas: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Each lesson focuses on discussion around a topic and then incorporates that topic into the running workout. For example, our first meeting was focused on getting to know each other. Each girl picked an adjective to describe herself that matched with the first letter of her first name (Ex., “Sassy Samarah” or “Athletic Abby”). Every girl wrote each participants name and adjective on a label. During our running workout, as they passed a teammate they had to stick their label on them and encourage them to keep moving. Throughout the program, we will discuss how to set goals and work toward those goals. The culminating event for this program is the Girls on the Run 5k downtown on Saturday, May 21st. Anyone can participate, and each girl is encouraged to ask a family member to run with them. At Rose Hill Elementary, the head coach for the program is Miss Pope and the assistant coach is Mrs.Buehler. We also have three Running Buddies who come to run with the girls as often as they can: Miss Heintzelman (Rose Hill), Miss Winner (Herbert Mills), and Miss Bruffey (Herbert Mills).

The 5K is on Saturday, May 21st. Pre-race festivities start at 8:00 a.m. and the race itself starts at 9:00 a.m. Here is the link with more information and to register: http://girlsontherunfranklincounty.org/5k/.
