Dear STEM Families,

I hope that all of our STEM scholars are enjoying the break that the weekend brings.  I just wanted to make sure that I shared with you a few updates, two exciting upcoming events for our STEM scholars, as well as exciting opportunities of exploration that are on the horizon.

The Career Fair is just around the bend and we are beyond excited!  We will have several professionals from the world of STEM, both face-to-face and virtually pouring into our scholars; showing them exactly who they can be!  It is not too late to be a part of the enrichment.  If you or a family friend is a STEM professional and would like to grow our scholars, please contact our Career Fair chair, Mr. Browning. [email protected]

Exploration!

8th grade Career Connections at the OSU Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory:

STEM students went on an amazing field trip, to The OSU Waterman Farms!   At SMBR, STEM is explored through the lenses of Health Sciences, Social Justice and Environmental Science.  Our partnership with the OSU College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, enhances and further enriches our study of Environmental Sciences.  Mr. Browning (Career Connections) and Mr. Irwin (Geographical Cultivation) along with our scholars had an opportunity to experience an immersive experience of what the future has in store for food and our environment. A few awesome pictures are attached.

VIPs Literacy Night! - Shout out to all of our scholar families who attended the VIPs (Very Important Parents in STEM) Literacy Night! We kicked the night off, with a friendly game of Wordle! Stakes were high, as the SMBR “Loads of Love” gift basket was up for grabs!   Fun competition was in the air, amidst our SMBR family!   Hooray to the Super STEMtastic Smith family, who solved the Wordle!

STEM families learned more about our budding partnership with I Know I Can and Gear Up, as well as heard from our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Featherstone!  I Know I Can informed families that it is never too soon to begin preparing for college and provided more information about our soon to begin middle-school advising.  Mrs. Featherstone shared tips on how parents can enhance reading at home, for middle grade students.  Students presented snapshots of each of our School Wide Book Reads(SWBR). The presentations included brief overviews and SWBR projects were on display.  Congrats to Mr. Keith our Humanities chair and our ELA department for hosting such an STEMazing night!  A few STEMrific pictures are attached!

On the horizon: 7th grade Science/ Hocking Hills, 6th grade/Carnegie Science Center (virtual tours).  The Abbott Nutrition Future Well Kids  program will kick off in November (6th grade)!

Call to Action:  STEM Parents, we need you!  If you are interested in volunteering at SMBR, please do not hesitate to contact the school.  Presently, we would love to have parent support at the end of the day, to support student safety in our car rider lot and walkways for our STEM walkers.  Also, STEM is hiring!  We are in search of more paraprofessionals and also intervention specialists.  More information can be found on the District's Human Resources website.

Yours in Education,

Principal India Wilson
